Training as a Spiritual Director
Are you being called to the ministry of "holy listening"? As our world grows increasingly noisy, the need for companioning others on their spiritual journey has never been greater. The Diocese is committed to fostering a community of well-formed Spiritual Directors who can walk alongside others as they discern God’s presence in their daily lives.
The ministry of Spiritual Direction is a "call within a call"—a vocation to sit with others in the presence of the Holy Spirit. We encourage prospective directors to explore training pathways that reflect the diverse traditions of our faith.
Finding Your Path: Diverse Traditions
Training for this ministry is not "one size fits all." Depending on your own prayer life and temperament, you may feel drawn to a specific spiritual charism. The Diocese in Europe support training programs rooted in various traditions, including:
- Ignatian Spirituality: Focusing on "finding God in all things," this path emphasizes the Spiritual Exercises, discernment of spirits, and an active, reflective prayer life.
- Benedictine Spirituality: Rooted in the Rule of St. Benedict, this approach focuses on rhythm, stability, listening with "the ear of the heart," and the sacredness of ordinary life.
- Contemplative & Celtic Paths: These traditions often emphasize silence, the beauty of creation, and a deep awareness of the "thin places" where heaven and earth meet.
Whether you prefer in-person immersion or the flexibility of online formation, there are various courses—ranging from introductory certificates to several-year diplomas—that can help you hone the skill of holy listening.
A Ministry of Integrity
Spiritual Direction is a sacred trust that requires a foundation of safety and support. The Diocese is committed to excellence in this ministry; we expect all our directors to engage in:
- Robust Formation: Comprehensive training in the history and practice of accompaniment.
- Regular Supervision: A vital space for directors to reflect on their work and maintain spiritual health.
- Safeguarding: Ensuring a secure and respectful environment for every seeker.
Discern Your Vocation
Is God calling you to be a companion to others on their journey of faith? You do not have to discern this alone.
