The aim of Continuing Ministerial Development (CMD) is to contribute to ministerial flourishing at every stage and in every expression of ordained ministry. CMD includes the following dimensions: theological, vocational, knowledge and skills for ministry, reflection on ministry (MDR), and personal wellbeing. 

Developing ministerial flourishing is a shared responsibility and reflects partnership between individual clergy, the Diocesan Bishop and the chaplaincies in which clergy serve. It is worked out in the changing and varied contexts of our very diverse and dispersed Diocese. This is in line with the properly resourced ministry envisaged in the Diocesan strategy.

CMD

Coaching, supervision and training are all ways to develop the knowledge and skills needed for ministry. All licensed clergy are entitled to use an annual grant towards funding these - see CMD Guidelines. 

Most training is by external providers, but the Diocese is developing a range of online and in-person training events. These include Induction webinars for those new to the Diocese (Welcome, Governance & Administration, Finance, Mission & Ministry), an annual Bishops’ Study event, and Praxis events that focus on particular ministerial areas and questions.

The acting head of CMD is available to talk with and guide clergy in selecting training arising for MDR and planning for Sabbaticals and other study. 

Watch out for the quarterly CMD Update. It is usually on a theme and also signposts you to learning opportunities in the Diocese and beyond. 

Ministerial Development Review

While MDR is a requirement for all licensed clergy in our Diocese this is developmental, using a combination of personal reflection using simple review documents and a conversation with a review partner. This gives rise to personal and ministerial goals that feed into CMD. 

MDR conversations take place every three years.

Wellbeing

What enables you to live and minister out of a place of rest? 

Clergy wellbeing involves the interplay of several different factors and is a shared responsibility. The Diocese is learning important lessons about resources and support that can be offered to clergy and chaplaincies to contribute to an overall sense of wellbeing.
