Bishop's Study Day a great success
Geoff Read is the acting Head of Continuing Ministerial Development as well as chaplain of All Saints Church, Luxembourg. He reflects on a recent event;
'As we live and go about daily ministry, we all do so with a “background hum” of uncertainty caused by unfolding global events - armed conflict, a summer of forest fires, and migration to name but a few in our Diocese. Depending where you are and what’s going on, the hum is louder or softer, but always there.
So around ninety clergy and Readers took time to work together on the question “How can we live and minister hope in the face of uncertainty, despair and hopelessness?”
Offered online twice, the Bishops’ Study gathering used a model of theological reflection working with video stories from two people in our Diocese living in contexts of deep uncertainty. Rev Dr Dorothee Bertschmann (New Testament scholar and Chaplain in Basel) offered biblical input on Romans 8. Plus there was ample time in small groups for careful discussion about keeping faith with the wider church, disciple making and preaching hope. Bishop Andrew and Bishop Alison White gave closing remarks and led prayers.
The planning group, which worked collaboratively on the gathering since January, was led by head of CMD, Rev Canon Geoff Read and included lay and ordained members from throughout the Diocese. The event was jointly organised with the Anglican Institute of Belgium and supported by the Diocesan Comms team.'
Participant feedback included:
"The effective linking up of real-life scenarios with profound theological reflection, bolstered by the presence of a biblical scholar."
and
"Thinking together across the diocese and sparking personal thinking about application of biblical principles in our present context."
We continue to pray for all who journey in their continued ministrerial development: A Prayer for our clergy to keep growing in their vocation and the skills for ministry
