Growth in Slovenia
Sustaining and ministering to the Anglican congregation in Ljubljana, Slovenia, is a true international effort involving Slovenia, Croatia, and Hungary. Susan Cook is a Churchwarden at Slovenia, although as she says;
"We have maintained an Anglican presence for over twenty years, with a monthly service held in the Lutheran church in Ljubljana. A few years ago, we were taken under the wing of St Margaret’s Budapest and their chaplain, Revd Canon Frank Hegedus, who connected us with Janet Berković, a Licensed Reader who lives in neighbouring Croatia. Myself and Charlotte Taft are the Co-ordinators in Slovenia and co-Wardens.
With the support of Father Frank, his associates, and Janet, the church has grown from a handful of regular worshippers to a core group of around 14, with over 20 people on special occasions, such as Remembrance Sunday and Advent services. Three teenage boys (and their families) have joined the congregation over the past year, two of whom were baptised and are now preparing for confirmation under Janet’s guidance.
Many of us travel over an hour to get to church each month, so we are genuinely glad to see each other, welcome visitors, and enjoy lunch together. Friendships continue outside the service and joining the harvest at a member’s vineyard."
Susan is also an author and the community recently spent time together reviewing her first book in a mystery series: A Whitsun Wedding Murder, set in a 1950s Dorset parish, which is her current UK base. She notes that;
"My writing and faith have been nurtured by my membership of the Association of Christian Writers (ACW), and it was partly this that prompted me to develop the idea for a 'crossover' series, one that Christians and non Christians can hopefully read and enjoy."
