Obituary of Bishop Bill Godfrey
Bishop Bill Godfrey had a long-running link between our diocese and the Anglican diocese of Peru. This link continues to be strong.
Bishop Jorge Aguilar, Diocesan Bishop of Peru shared this reflection on his life.
Bishop William Godfrey brought to Peru a vision similar to the one he had in Uruguay, especially with regard to expanding the mission field of the Anglican Church of Peru by creating new congregations, without forgetting those most in need. For him, a faith community should always have a church, a school, and a social or health program that benefited the most vulnerable.
During his tenure, the diocese experienced peak growth of around fifty churches and missions located in Lima, Arequipa, Juliaca, Puno, Cabanaconde, Huancayo, Chiclayo, and Cajamarca. It's worth noting that work continued in the poorest outlying areas of Lima. The church was perceived as dynamic and growing, committed to preaching the Gospel, Christian education, and social outreach.
On the other hand, Bishop William Godfrey was deeply concerned for the members of his congregations. He always showed love and affection for the members of his congregations and even for strangers. He did much good for numerous families, regardless of whether they were Anglican or not. Many clergymen were also helped by him. He truly had a generous and trusting heart.
Finally, a testimony from a clergyman who is a role model in our Anglican family: "He never hesitated to help. Those of us who knew him well always saw a very compassionate and loving man toward all kinds of people. That is why, even today, Bishop William Godfrey is much loved and remembered by many within the Church." For me personally, he was a pastoral bishop who proclaimed the gospel in the desert of our needs and gave us a witness of hope in the Lord.
