Our Voice Matters: A Special Youth Gathering

For the first time in the Diocese in Europe, young people from across the Eastern Archdeaconry were invited to attend a youth gathering in Prague over Pentecost weekend, 6th-8th June. The event, organised by the Diocesan Head of Children and Young People’s Strategy and Development, saw 17 young people from Turkey, Hungary, Poland, Greece, and Austria spend a weekend of discussion, fellowship and enjoy a chance to socialise together.
Discussion followed the theme of ‘Our Voice Matters’ and a highlight was a special visit from Bishop Andrew, who spent time listening to the concerns, hopes and ideas of the young people. Here are his thoughts:
Hear from some of the young people in attendance:
“I would say most of the European Anglican churches have representation of different cultures, so how can we make them feel more at home. To bring peace to them and allow them to feel like they are part of the worship, like they have a say and they can experience a bit of home, as long as it is in line with the worship of the one true God?”
Sonja, Budapest
We want to be able to pray for peace and be able to support refugees, as they have suffered and are helpless.
Philip, Poland
“I really wish the church has more social activities for the young people because especially as a person who comes from Istanbul, we don't have too many Christian congregations”
Emre, Instanbul
“..my biggest fear for the future it's related to the climate changes and how people are dealing with this topic. I think the church could not just speak about this issue, but the church could also do some acts and projects that could help solve this issue, because it's a big thing now and I think the church should take care of it as well.”
Lukas, Brno
More of the voices of those who attended will be heard at the Diocesan Synod, which took place this week (w/c 9th June) in Cologne. Here is Revd Iain Bendrey introducing some of those who attended, as well as some of their thoughts:
