Last weekend, St George's chaplaincy in Madrid welcomed The Most Revd & Rt Hon Stephen Cottrell, Archbishop of York, as they celebrated their 100th anniversary.

Revd. Canon Sal McDougall, Chaplain at St George's, said;

 "It was a great privilege and honour when Archbishop Stephen accepted our invitation to join us to preside and preach at St George’s as a key part of our centenary celebrations this year. In this important year for our chaplaincy, his visit was a timely reminder not only of our history, but also of our hope for the future and our calling to offer the distinctiveness of the Anglican vision in the modern European context. It was such a joy to have him and his wife, Rebecca, with us and the weekend was an undoubted highlight of an exciting year in the life of St George’s."

In a video message posted on the Archbishop of York's Facebook page, Archbishop Stephen said;

"..this Sunday, I've been in Madrid to the Anglican Chaplaincy of Saint George's in Madrid, which is celebrating its centenary year this year and Sal, the wonderful chaplain and priest of this community just invited me and it's been a wonderful morning. It helped me to understand how important this bit of the Church of England is, the Diocese in Europe with chaplaincies right across towns and cities and villages. Across the whole of Europe. Offering something very distinctive, flowing from the Anglican tradition and from the Anglican theological vision, which is so much about embracing diversity, embracing difference, gathering all sorts of people together. So it's been a joy for me to be here. I've been part of a worshipping community where literally every generation was well represented."
